As we know it, narcissism is most commonly seen in various scenarios. We can meet one as a relative or as friend or even worse as your mentor -leader in the workplace. Narcissism induces the person to look away from the original concern or issue and rather see and think of his or her own way. The colleagues or subordinates, would be stuck in a double whammy situation, wherein they are required to stick to agenda even where their leader is still in self-obsessive state of mind. Then the most important question keeps in mind- how to deal with such a narcissist leader without judging or without creating any conflicts? Yes, it is possible.
Don’t get diverted
When a narcissist takes over any meeting or any issue, he or she may push their own agenda, forcing you to digest much of unnecessary and irrelevant information and suggestions. This may cause many of the colleagues or subordinates to deviate from the original agenda. To stop this, you would need to assess and understand the important concerns and issue which were originally to be discussed and stick to the enterprise goals and objectives in any case.
Why reaction for every action?
It is true that a narcissist can open can of worms and simple issue can turn into a whole big messy situation. A simple solution is to stop reacting to every statement or every action of the leader. It is important that you all respect the timeframe for decision making and hence, need not deter from the original path.
Say it and mean it
Assessment and evaluation are part of workplace ethics. Even though informal, you need to assess and voice your opinion to the leader. Your feedback should be genuine and relevant so that even the narcissist cant deny the fact and drown in his own self-created myths. This would benefit you rather than just beating around the bushes.
Don’t be his poodle
This is the most intense thing which may even enrage your narcissist leader or he or she may even stop believing in you and your ideology. However, this step is much necessary where it becomes difficult to even sit through the meetings. Most outrageous things do need your attention and that is the time when you should cut it loose.
Don’t be afraid to speak up
Narcissists are infamous for enraging for no reason to fuel their self-obsession and with an authority and power, you can expect them to become like king or queen. They get their power from undermining and underrating others. But don’t ever fall prey to their self-boasting and don’t ever support their deprecating talk.
Bond for support
We do not support backbiting but yes, to some extent you need somebody at your workplace to spill the beans, especially the ones which hurt you the most. However, don’t confide in people whom you can think of two way weapons and can use your information to their benefit.
