Webinar by Assoc Prof Umesh Sharma: The Role of Management Accountants in Accounting for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)

The purpose of this webinar is to examine the differing roles of management accountants in accounting for sustainable development goals (SDG) in their organisations. The perceptions that management accountants have of their roles in accounting for SDG are examined by conducting interviews and surveys of management accountants from various organisations in New Zealand.  It is found that management accountants of small-medium organisations in New Zealand unfortunately play a limited role in accounting for sustainable development compared to management accountants of larger organisations because of a number of deterrents placed by the organisation and their various stakeholders. These deterrents are very possibly present globally as well. This webinar will help management accountants of both small-medium and larger organisations to advance accounting for SDG within their organisations by actively engaging with the issues that have deterred such advancement.

Associate Professor Umesh Sharma

Umesh Sharma is an Associate Professor of Accounting at the University of Waikato in New Zealand.  Umesh is internationally known for his research on management accounting, sustainability accounting and accounting history. Umesh is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Fiji and a Visiting Fellow at the University of the South Pacific. He has over 150 research-based publications and presentations, including more than 50 articles in refereed journals, and a textbook which is in its third edition namely Accounting Principles and Practices for New Zealand students. Umesh has published several articles on recent developments in management accounting and sustainability accounting and continues to research in these areas.
