Dr John Osman Miller AO is proud of his role in using management accounting throughout his career, with beginnings at what is now Pitcher Partners, through to extensive work in industry settings in North America, UK and Australia.
He has been a leader in the fields of Accounting, Academia and the Public Sector; and subsequently accepted appointments as a Non-Executive Director from both sides of politics at the Commonwealth and State levels; and also in the Private and Not-For-Profit (NFP) sectors. Amongst his senior roles in the public sector was Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria; and a Member of the Commonwealth Management Investment Corporation’s Licensing Board. His private sector roles included Chairman of E.D. Oats Pty. Ltd; Chairman and Managing Partner at Pannell Kerr Foster Chartered Accountants; Partner, Hungerford’s Chartered Accountants; Director of Mt. Buller Alpine Resort; Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort and South Gippsland Water; and Senior Consultant at PA Management Consultants.
Dr. Miller’s academic record is no less impressive. He was Professor and Head of the Graduate School of Management at Swinburne University, and Head of the School of Management at the David Syme Faculty of Business, Monash University; Dean of the David Syme Business School at the Chisholm Institute of Technology; Member of the Board of Governors Haifa University; and Kellogg Foundation Fellow at University of New England.
Dr. Miller’s qualifications include a BA and BCom from The University of Melbourne, and a PhD from Monash University. He has published many books and monographs in the areas of financial management, the accounting profession, and strategic management accounting.
He is a former President of CPA Australia and of the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants (CAPA). In 1979, he was awarded the Order of Australia (AO) for contributions to education and the community, and in 2003 the Australian Centenary Medal for “Leadership in Accounting, University life and the Public Sector”.
He is one of the Founders of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants, and is now a Patron of the ICMA, and a Fellow Certified Management Accountant (FCMA). He has also accepted Honorary Life memberships of CPA Australia, the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and the John Button Foundation of which he was a founding member.
The Institute of Certified Management Accountants is honoured to induct Dr. John Miller to the Global Management Accounting Hall of Fame® for his services to the profession in Australia.
